Adding Joy to Your New Year Goals
As we step into a new year, many of us feel the weight of our resolutions. We want to eat healthier, exercise more, be kinder, or chase our dreams. It is important that we have goals and continue to strive, but they often come with pressure. For one thing, it has been noted by wiser people than me, that we tend to underestimate what we can accomplish in a lifetime but overestimate what we can accomplish in a year. When we set our annual goals, we think we have to push hard, be perfect, or succeed quickly. That mindset can make resolutions feel like a heavy burden to carry.
But what if we took a different approach? Author Aldous Huxley, who wrote many books, most notably Brave New World, offers this advice: “It’s dark because you are trying too hard. Lightly, child, lightly. Learn to do everything lightly. Yes, feel lightly even though you’re feeling deeply.” This quote is a powerful reminder that we don’t have to tackle life with force. Instead, we can move through it with joy and lightness.
Let’s apply this idea to your New Year’s resolutions. Instead of focusing on doing everything perfectly, try to enjoy the journey and see what you can garner from the experience. If your goal is to exercise more, don’t start with a grueling workout. Take a short walk while listening to your favorite music. Smile as you move. Let the experience feel good. If you want to eat healthier, start with small changes. Add more colorful fruits and veggies to your plate. Celebrate each choice, no matter how small.
Huxley also says, “Throw away your baggage and go forward. There are quicksands all about you, sucking at your feet, trying to suck you down into fear and self-pity and despair. That’s why you must walk so lightly.” This part reminds us that fear and self-doubt can pull us down. When we carry too much worry about failure or think each setback is the end, we’re more likely to give up. Lightness helps us keep going. If you stumble, don’t beat yourself up. Laugh, learn, and move forward. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about making progress.
As a therapist, I’ve seen how powerful this mindset can be. When we approach our goals lightly, we feel less stress. We’re kinder to ourselves. That kindness fuels our motivation and helps us stay on track. Think of lightness as a way to take care of your mind and spirit while you work toward your goals.
This year, I encourage you to embrace Huxley’s wisdom. Walk lightly as you pursue your resolutions. Celebrate your wins, no matter how small. Let yourself feel joy in the process. Life isn’t a race, and resolutions aren’t punishments. They’re opportunities to grow, to explore, and to care for yourself in new ways.
So, as you set out on this journey, remember to breathe deeply, smile often, and take one step at a time. Lightly, lightly. That’s the best way to turn resolutions into realities—and to enjoy the adventure along the way.
