Body Image & Overeating
- Are you unhappy with how your body looks?
- Are you convinced your life would be happier if you could just lose a certain number of pounds?
- Are you tired of thinking, worrying, obsessing about food and/or your weight?
I'd like to help you develop new skills and a new mindset so you can make peace with how you look and make peace with how you eat. Obesity is at epidemic proportions in this country. Study after study links obesity with many serious, chronic health problems that effect our quality of life. Every day there is a new product or new diet that promises to help you lose weight and attain good health. Yet, as a country, we get bigger and bigger...
We are barraged by messages that tell us to be thin is to be In. Obesity is considered unattractive and is linked with many negative stereotypes. Obese children are often the target of bullying. Paradoxically, the pressure on women and, increasingly, men to attain an ideal body size contributes to the obesity epidemic. Obsession with body image only increases anxiety and often leads to periods of strict dieting, followed by the inevitable relapse and binge. In others, it leads to other eating disorders such as anorexia or bulemia. We chase the perfect body image with diet after diet and weight loss gimmick after gimmick. Some people even resort to gastric bypass surgery, a drastic procedure that can produce profound results, but that can also come with serious side effects and no guarantee of permanent weight loss.
But it doesn't have to be this way. By modifying some of the tools I use in working with my clients with alcohol and drug disorders, I have helped many people learn to make peace with their bodies, develop healthy eating behaviors, and develop peace of mind about their appearance.
